From Coffee Shop Dreams to Mental Health Pioneers: Our Ongoing Journey 

Over a steaming cup of coffee at Costa, Jessica and I, both deeply involved in acute mental health services within the health sector, found ourselves discussing a pressing issue. We both felt that there were significant gaps in mental health provision, particularly in the realm of early intervention. What started as a casual conversation quickly evolved into a passionate discussion about what we could do to bridge these gaps.

The Leap of Faith

Leaving behind our secure jobs was not an easy decision. Our colleagues and some industry sceptics cautioned us against it, highlighting the risks and uncertainties. Yet, with unwavering support from our husbands and a shared drive to step outside our comfort zones, Jessica and I decided to take the leap. We embraced the mantra, “Let’s try,” despite having no initial income and plenty of uncertainties ahead.

Building from the Ground Up

Our journey began in a small room, with nothing but our vision and determination. We dreamed big, envisioning a comprehensive wellbeing hub where various mental health services could come together under one roof. This hub would provide early intervention and ongoing support, filling the void we had so often witnessed in our previous roles.

Facing Imposter Syndrome

As clinicians, Jessica and I had no experience running a business. Terms like networking, elevator pitches, and service level agreements were completely foreign to us. Each day presented a new hurdle to jump and something new to learn. The comfort and confidence we felt in our clinical practice were starkly contrasted by the uncertainty and self-doubt we faced in the business world.

Imposter syndrome was a constant companion. We often questioned our ability to succeed in this new arena. Were we really capable of building a business from scratch? Did we have what it took to navigate the complexities of the entrepreneurial world? These doubts were pervasive, but we were determined not to let them define us.

Learning and Growing

To overcome these challenges, we adopted several strategies:

1. **Continuous Learning**: We immersed ourselves in learning everything we could about running a business. We took courses, attended workshops, and read extensively on topics ranging from marketing to financial management.

2. **Seeking Mentorship**: We reached out to experienced businesswomen who had navigated similar paths. Their guidance and support were invaluable, providing us with the knowledge and confidence to move forward.

3. **Open Dialogue**: We maintained open and honest conversations about our insecurities and fears. This transparency strengthened our partnership and allowed us to support each other through the toughest times.

4. **Celebrating Small Wins**: By acknowledging and celebrating our achievements, no matter how small, we reinforced our sense of capability and progress.

As our vision began to materialise, people started to get it. Insula Wellbeing attracted attention, not just from individuals seeking help, but from companies and organisations that began to see the value in what we were offering. Our holistic approach to mental health, focusing on early intervention and comprehensive support, resonated deeply with those we aimed to help.

Early Successes and New Challenges

While we have much to celebrate, we acknowledge that we are still a young business with a long way to go. The demand for our services has grown, prompting us to bring in more staff to meet the needs of our clients. This expansion is both exciting and daunting. Learning to let go a little and entrust others with our vision is a massive change for us. It’s a little scary, but we are committed to fostering a supportive and capable team.

We never imagined how hard the work would be, but it has been incredibly rewarding. Every challenge conquered and every hurdle jumped has reinforced our commitment and passion for what we are building.
